This ratio calculates the sum of the population aged 0-14 plus the population aged 65 years and over and taken as a percentage of the working age population. Table 03 provides a comparison of the population spreads between Valletta and Malta at the last census of population in 2005. The Table shows that Valletta lags the rest of the country by a sizeable margin in all categories of age groups with the exception of the 50-59 group. This means that there are not as many babies and young people in Valletta nor people in the working age group resident in the capital city. The current trends signify that the population of Valletta is unlikely to progress in the coming generation in view of the big gaps between Valletta and the rest of Malta in the under-20 age group unless the trends are reversed. The trends are reversed in the over-60 age group where Valletta scores much higher than the rest of the country. This, however, is not considered a positive development both from earning capacities and expenditure patterns. Earning capacities are extremely limited in this age-group and consumption expenditures are skewed.
